Play. Ball.
Whether you have 2 full teams or just a few friends here are a few of our favorite ways to play flag football.
5-on-5
-
This the version of flag football that everyone knows and loves. Each Flag Kit comes with enough flags to play a game of 5-on-5, just like at the Olympics in 2028. There cones for marking each end zone and midfield. Just grab an extra kit for larger games of 7-on-7 or 9-on-9.
-
5-on-5 Flag rules can vary from league to league or backyard to backyard, but in general:
1. A team can achieve a first down by crossing midfield.2. Each team gets 4 plays to reach midfield.
3. Once they cross midfield each team has 4 downs to score a touchdown or punt.
4. Each player is to wear 2 flags, one on each side of their hips.
5. Rules related to rushing, blitzing and blocking may vary depending on players skill levels and experience.
Flag 21
-
This game is exactly what it sounds like, a football version of the basketball game, 21. This game is perfect for when you want to play an exciting game of flag football, but don’t have enough players to make up 2 teams.
-
This game is fairly simple and can be played by players of any age or skill level:
1. Start by marking one endzone with 4 cones.
2. Next mark midfield.
3. Mark as much of each sideline as you prefer.
4. One player stands at midfield, they are the “returner”
5. The other players stand in the endzone. They are the “defenders”.
6. The Defenders “kickoff” the football to the Returner, either by throwing the ball or kicking it towards midfield.
7. The Returner is awarded 3 points for scoring a touchdown.
8. If a Defender pulls off one of the Returner’s flags then they are awarded 2 points.
9. If the Returner is forced out of bounds then both Defenders are awarded 1 point each.
10. Players rotate as Returner and Defenders until one player reaches 21.
Flag Rodeo
-
Remember the game sharks and minnows? Well this is a flag football version that is great for a gym class or an end of practice flag pulling drill.
-
Feel free to adapt these rules to fit your class, practice or backyard:
1. Use as many cones as necessary to mark a square or circular area.
2. All players must wear 2 flags and stand inside the marked area.
3. Each player must attempt to pull the flags of the players around them.
4. If both of your flags are pulled then you are out.
5. The last player with at least one flag on their waist is the winner.
